ojdo If major radio programming would play pop music this rich, varied, and tightly produced, I would not have to maintain my private music collection.
Take symphonic pop, add a spoonful electro, gorgeous vocals, stir for over a decade and presto, Bonfire Night is done.
The title best "summarises" the album; my close second pick is "Do You Beat Your Heart Or Don't You". Favorite track: Bonfire Night.

If this moment has arrived unexpectedly If you did not expect to be this old Don't take it personally We used to measure first times with second hands And draw up plans for love A language we could understand On Bonfire Night You're still stood there with that look in your eye Ready to burn The autumn in your hair We send smoke up to the stars while they seperate while our bodies take the blame when our bodies break If this moment has arrived unexpectedly (throw it on the fire) and if all you carry round is anxiety (throw it on the fire) If you've brought a guy with you then simply (throw him on the fire) And if matter is frustrated E N E R G Y don't we just Throw it on the fire?

That first time we met Out back by the bins I felt the chaos under everything That first time we met, I didn't know anyone But you lit up the moment for me, Then the moment was gone Now, it's ten years on And i'm stuck on the same song Yeah, still fussy and yeah, still working on 'Things to do with your hands at parties' Oh how time flies Where does a moment go, when it dies? I don't play any shows I just stay in, and practice my arpeggios

You kiss the ketchup from my face then look for a bus home the morning's shy, it hesitates Too early? It's too late... You won't miss me We were never young And this tired tongue Has stolen every honest word it's ever sung You won't miss me We were never young let's make our own fun Hiding here in the undergrowth Until the birds come As if the dawn depends on us Just sharing something After the dolphin, chicken wings After that, nothing.

If I saw her in town I would walk up, or I would walk away When I have a choice, I do, or do not and then regret it either way I keep having the same dream about Soren and Regine I don't ask 'what does this mean?!' It's there, in the spaces between And of course I understand to share a life can be so hard, but, no, i won't live alone. I will get a dog. I will call him Kierkegaard.

3am, Phnom Penh I wasn't ready for this news Well, I'll walk down to the river Looking for valium and booze I know all the music they'll be playing In London, Berlin and LA And don't the stars look very different today? 4am, Phnom Penh I have tried my best to live well But through drunken dream, a dog is barking As i turn back to the hotel If there was someone here to talk to, Would there be anything to say, except 'Don't the stars look very different today?'

On time, for once On time without distraction I'm here with you If time, my love If time is just abstraction Then what are you? Are you emotional Are you what they call 'original'? Do you beat your heart or don't you? Do you beat your heart? Are you emotional Are you what they call 'political' Do you beat your heart or don't you? Do you beat your heart? On time, for once And you have my whole attention It's all I give to you

Sleep I reach for you, dark lovely and deep But tonight there's something wrong Dream I reach for you, through every shattered screen Like a poet, looking for glue Yeah, like some poet looking for glue Dream I reach for you Dream I reach for you Sleep I reach for you Like some poet looking for glue Dream I reach for you

There is a peaceful part of the car park At the worker's stadium I'll meet you there, unseen Yeah, i'll meet you between The anti aircraft guns At the worker's stadium Waiting for you to come Whose dreams are these? There is a peaceful part of the car park Underneath the cherry tree Where I fell to fitful sleep The first time in a week Dreaming that you'd wake me No love without suffering No peaceful heart without overwhelming I just want to be near you It's a sunny day here, in North Korea

If I miss this train my won't stop One shallow breath is all I've got Can I find in it a deeper time While I am running for this cold Chingford line? I could find work getting lost at sea Commuters glad to see the back of me I'll dive shipwrecks for emotion Precious patterns of thinking, sinking into the ocean Or i could go back to the olive trees Computers glad to see the back of me Let's sit around a drum and sing 'This is what happens, when we run out of nothing'

about

The culmination and pinnacle of five years of dedication to writing pop music Bonfire Night is literate, funny, clever and experimental; as expressive as it is catchy, as interesting as it is indispensable. The title track took more a decade to complete, spanning numerous iterations and reworks, false starts and throw aways. But it’s all there now - time, aging, liberation from anxieties. It is symptomatic.

The core cycle here shows the diversity and songcraft at play, telling the story of a romance beginning to end. ‘Things To Do With Your Hand At Parties’ is a total romp of popping slap-bass, vocoder and sky-scraping guitars and arpeggiators. ‘Chicken Wings’ is a stately string-led tale of a nocturnal breakup, late night sadness as night turns to dawn and silence turns to birdsong. Referencing existentialist philosopher Søren Kierkegaard’s doomed romance with Regine Olsen, ‘Soren & Regine’ is a beautiful piece of chamber pop. But there is plenty more where that came from. ‘Repeating’ comes in with a kraut pulse, motorik beats sounding like cLOUDDEAD colliding into Dexy's Midnight Runners. In ‘3am, Phnom Penh’ delayed vocals are a call back to Brian Eno’s ghostly Berlin era productions with synth lines straight out of The Cure’s Disintegration. ‘Glue’ brings beautiful brass borrowed from Neutral Milk Hotel and swung drums beloved of almost every great nineties pop hit.

The concluding track ‘Talk Less Say More (Three Birds)’ is the last track Matthew will be making as Talk Less Say More. It’s gorgeous: 90s house piano lilts with flutes over with bubbling synths, choppy guitar alongside 80s inspired bongo solos and a chant. These elements are somehow brought into a seamless whole. The attention to detail is staggering - from the random analog blasts to the clipping of a snare drum reverb in the introduction. “So no more songs for these three birds” sings Matthew “no more agonising over words”.

Bonfire Night is a brilliant record, the final part of the art pop trilogy of albums begun with the critically acclaimed England Without Rain in 2012 and continued with Violent in 2014. It is a bittersweet because this is an ending. But what a way to go out.
